N:From the Fiddler's Companion;
N:
N:The popular Gaelic song ... tells of a longed-for homecoming, how the
N:protagonist yearns to see the sights of home and how he wishes to hear
N:the sounds of his birth language. According to Helen Creighton and
N:Calum MacLeod (Gaelic Songs in Nova Scotia, 1979, pg. 13) the tune was
N:a favorite of King George VI and was played at his funeral, and it was
N:similarly played as a lament for President John F. Kennedy's funeral.
N:The authors state the original Gaelic words were written in 1856 by
N:John Cameron of Ballachulish, Scotland, although the title was first
N:"Dùil ri Baile Chaolais fhaicinn" (Hoping to see Ballachulish), set
N:to an air adapted from the English tune "Johnny stays long at the Fair."
